I filed a bug/enhancement request about 12 months ago regarding changing the default port name of an ethernet based interface. There is no way that the driver can really influence on the name chosen by the Network preferences panel. What you need is an external application that uses the SystemConfiguration framework to change the name of the ethernet port. See MoreSCF for examples. Note that the ethernet port name is localized, and the localization information is hardcoded into the Network preferences application. Makes me regret Open transport !!!!!!
