Hi,
I have been looking at this a bit more, and I have saved a couple of
EtherPeek captures, and what seems to be going in and out are some
AppleTalk ZIP and NBP traffic (understandable), DHCP traffic, and a
bunch of Rendezvous stuff. I just switched it over to a manual IP
address, and the problem goes away. So I guess either Mac OS 10.2 or
our DHCP server are to blame?
The DHCP request coming out of my test system is asking for these
options (names taken from "gen_dhcp_tags.h"):
Requested Option: 1 Subnet Mask
Requested Option: 3 Routers
Requested Option: 6 Domain Name Servers
Requested Option: 15 Domain Name
Requested Option: 112 (dhcptag_netinfo_server_address_e)
Requested Option: 113 (dhcptag_netinfo_server_tag_e)
Requested Option: 78 (dhcptag_slp_directory_agent_e)
Requested Option: 79 (dhcptag_slp_service_scope_e)
Requested Option: 95 (dhcptag_ldap_url_e)
Maximum Message Size
Option Code: 57 (dhcptag_max_dhcp_message_size_e)
Option Length: 2
Value: 1500
Client Identifier
Option Code: 61 (dhcptag_client_identifier_e)
Option Length: 7
Hardware Type: 1
Hardware Address: 00:30:65:E5:41:E0
Requested IP Address
Option Code: 50 (dhcptag_requested_ip_address_e)
Option Length: 4
Address: 15.62.68.156
IP Address Lease Time
Option Code: 51 (dhcptag_lease_time_e)
Option Length: 4
Value: 7776000
DHCP Option End
Option Code: 255(dhcptag_end_e)
That source file from Darwin is available here (requires login):
http://www.opensource.apple.com/cgi-bin/registered/cvs/src/live/bootp/
bootplib/gen_dhcp_tags.h?rev=1.2&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup
I can supply the reply breakdown as well, if anybody cares (hopefully
someone does). I don't know if it is the DHCP server sending back a
confusing reply that messes up the Cube, or if the Cube is just getting
confused by a perfectly legitimate reply.
tia,
Smith

Hi,
This is network-related, and programming related, in a way. Just
hear me out! :-)
I have a G4 Cube I use as a test box at work. I have a number of
partitions on it, and I use ASR to image those partitions with
whatever version of the OS I need to do some testing. This is
probably a pretty typical setup. The original graphics card died
(bad VRAM), so I did what seems to be a fairly typical swap, and
installed a GForce2 card from another system (swapped the PCI slot
plate with the one from the original Cube graphics card). Other than
that it is totally unmodified.
The wacky thing is that I have had the worst time getting Jaguar to
install on this system. I have been using CDs burned from the 6C115
images available on the ADC seed site, and also from the Jaguar CDs
sent out with the ADC mailing. I have used both CD-RWs and CD-Rs for
the media on which I burn the Jaguar disk images. Disk 1 always
installs just fine, and the system restarts, but that is where weird
things start to happen. Here are the several scenarios I have
observed. It is the second one that seems network-related.
Hopefully this sounds familiar to someone at Apple.
CD-RW Install Disk:
---------------------------
Once it restarts, the system only starts for a very short period of
time, then the screen goes gray and a funny message is shown that
says "You need to restart your system", and the power button graphic
(circle with a line sticking out of the top), and then at the bottom
it says FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF (the length of this may be incorrect, but
it is all Fs). The firmware is 4.1.9, and I have probably reset the
PRAM about 58 times since the firmware update.
CD-R Disk or Jaguar CD:
---------------------------------
Boots fine, but then hangs before the intro app runs (movie with the
water globs, ambient music, registration and initial setup
assistant). Just staring at a blank blue screen. **BUT**, if I let
it get to this stage, and then unplug the LAN cable from the wall,
everything starts to move again, and the intro app runs. It is like
it is waiting for something. But after I complete the install with
the LAN cable unplugged, the system will behave normally if the
system stays off the LAN. When I do plug it in, lots of stuff starts
to go > haywire:
- most of the System Preferences don't work (greyed out, and ones
that aren't don't save any changes)
- checking the Startup Disk System Preferences panel will hang System
Preferences
- Running NetInfo Manager, no databases will be available
- Checking the "Sharing" System Preferences panel, all the sharing
mechanisms are disabled (greyed out). On the right, it says that the
"Cupertino Server" is on. I don't know what that is, but I bet there
are people in Cupertino that know. ;-)
Any Install Disk onto External Disk:
----------------------------------------------
I also tried installing Jaguar on an external FireWire disk from
another computer (iMac G4), and then booting the Cube from that
external disk. All is cool until I plug in the LAN cable.
Does any of this sound familiar to anybody? It sounds to me like
some kind of wacky problem with DHCP or NetInfo. But I haven't seen
this behavior on any of my other systems (B&W G3, TiBook).
TIA,
Smith
