Hi Roger,

Couple of things to bear in mind regarding Caller ID with the built in modem from Apple. First off you need to make sure you have an Apple USB Modem. The older Serial modem (original iMac, original graphite G4 tower) does not support caller ID.

The modem is, as far as I understand, an internal USB modem. The computer was bought around august 2002 ("mirrored drive doors").

There are two types of Caller ID in the marketplace. Type 1 and Type II . Type 1 Caller ID is *not* supported by Apple's USB Modem (Type 1 info is sent in between rings), however Type II Caller ID is supported by the Apple USB Modem.

I know that the type that is used in Denmark, is called CLIP. It's probably invented by someone at Tele Danmark (which is the danish phone-company).
Until now, I've found out that the caller-id information is sent to the subscriber by using DTMF tones, and it does not send a "wake" signal, so that the computer would have time to wake up from sleep.

Type II Caller ID is how the Internal Apple USB Modem is able to support v.92 and Modem on Hold functionality.

Note: For Type II Caller ID (With Apple's USB Modem) you have to have an Active connection (i.e you can't sit there in zterm with the port open).

Can you go into further details on "Active connection" ?
-does this mean that the caller-id is not transferred as text (like the "RING" and "CONNECT xxxx" messages) to the application that opened the device?

From what it sounds like, you need a modem which supports type 1 caller ID.

I'll try and ask TDC to send me some specifications on their protocols, in the meantime, this URL might be able to tell you if it's a type 1 or type 2 caller-id:

<http://www.blichfeldt.dk/numviser/index.htm>
-and if you know how the electronics work, here's the schematics: <http://www.blichfeldt.dk/numviser/numviser.gif>

Do you know if it's possible to update the firmware in the modem, so that it supports caller-id for Denmark ?
When looking at this site...
<http://dspcollaborative.analog.com/developers/ DSP_CompanyListing.asp?c_id=9>
I can see that there are many different types of caller-id, which is crazy, if you ask me.. ;)
-But you can see some information on CLIP used in Denmark here as well. =)

Love,
Jens
