Open Transport Status

Greetings All

As I announced a few weeks back, Apple has recently published a new Mac OS X-centric networking web page.

<http://developer.apple.com/networking/>

Part of that effort was a discussion of legacy networking technologies.

<http://developer.apple.com/networking/legacy.html>

Recently a couple of list threads have popped up concerning the behaviour of the Open Transport API on Mac OS X (sorry I haven't been very responsive recently; I've been travelling for business). If you're writing new Open Transport code, you should take heed of the following quote from the legacy networking technologies page.

Open Transport - Mac OS X provides an Open Transport compatibility framework. This framework is no longer under active development. If you're using the Open Transport framework, you should consider switching to BSD Sockets or, better yet, use one of the higher-level frameworks.

One consequence of the phrase "no longer under active development" is that we are unlikely to make a change to the OT framework unless it improves the reliability of existing applications in the field. Developers writing new code are expected to accommodate the idiosyncrasies of the current implementations on traditional Mac OS and Mac OS X.

I realise that this seriously inconveniences some of you. Sorry. However, Apple has made the decision to focus on improving new technologies as quickly as possible, and that means that we have leave some old things behind.

S+E
