I saw that note on one of the darwin websites. man for gethostid() i recall-

it recommended sysctl (CTL_KERN KERN_HOSTID), which ALSO returns 0x00000000

the sysctl() call is succeeding, returns 0 for result, and puts '4' in for the size..
it just is returning a bogus #.

if I knew how to get the broadcast address, I'd be down the road.
