Ahh yes, it all comes full circle. See the reason I am looking for a
firewall solution is because our antivirus solution is 'managed'. Not
to push our product or anything, but a single eTrust AV server managing
all the clients on a network handles these common problems. So long as
a firewall isn't blocking traffic, the server can tell its clients to
update their defs, perform nightly scans, and send results to a specific
address. It can even assign a client on a subnet as a proxy for all the
other clients to download their defs from. Thus assuring that all
computers on a network that are up and running have the most recent
virus definitions.
Luckily the server will log how many computers succeeded in updating
defs and how many failed so it will be possible for a network admin to
identify computers with firewalls. However, I would like to solve this
problem at the source by alerting the installer of the firewall's
presence.
