For those of you who are paranoid about security, you should consider
another firewall to protect yourself because the built-in firewall is
severely limited by its gui. In fact, can you think of a situation
where this firewall will actually protect you? I personally think the
best use of a firewall is to block outgoing traffic, something the
apple
firewall doesn't do.
That last point is actually very important, and it's a point that
people who said "a router is good enough for me" ignored. Our PC
customers that had the Blaster worm were actually protected by the
firewall because of the firewall's ability to protect outbound traffic.
Our AntiVirus Response Team is pretty good at getting defs out when a
new virus is detected in the wild, but getting people to update their
defs is another story. So our AntiVirus productm ay not have done some
people any good. On the other hand, we got many people congratulating
the PC firewall product on its ability to stop and block the Blaster
and SoBig viruses based on their ability to block outbound traffic.
Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud.
After a while, you realize the pig is enjoying it.
