Do you want the application to run on traditional Mac OS as well as Mac OS X? If so, your choices are much more limited.

If you're Mac OS X-only, which version of Mac OS X do you want to support?

Regardless, you probably shouldn't start with OTVirtualServer because the code is very complicated in an attempt to get the best performance. Rather, I'd recommend you start with a sample that uses a simple, synchronous networking API. Which API, and hence which sample, depends on which platforms you need to support. On the whole I recommend against writing new OT code unless you absolutely positively need to run on traditional Mac OS.
