I use internet config to get the name of the default browser

The string returned by IC when you get the default browser is a UI hint, for display when you can't find the app by creator code. It's definitely not something that you should rely on. Rather, you can get the user's default browser from Launch Services using LSGetApplicationForURL. Once you have a reference to the app, you can recover its bundle identifier (and failing that its creator) to see whether it's already running.
