I thought multicasting was having a fishing pole in each hand???

I feel like I am missing something here. I've read up about
multicasting, and I've implemented it and it's all working correct.
I'm at a loss about the theory though. According to Stevens, the
multicast group is completely separate from the local port you are
bound to -- but you need to do both operations in order to receive
multicast packets. You must be a member of the group and the packets
must all be directed at the port you are listening on in order for you
to receive them. This works wonderfully if you have 5 machines all
bound to port X and talking via the same group. Where I am getting
lost is... what if I have 2 applications on the same machine that want
to be in the same group? They can't both bind to the same port, so
that seems (to me at least) that it is simply not possible to have
more than one application in the same group on the same machine and
have both applications able to receive packets (since you can't
specify multiple destination ports on a packet).
Is my assumption correct, or am I just missing the point?
