You've probably heard this response already, but I'll repeat it for the benefit of the list. Apple does not support developers modifying preferences files directly. While it will often work (and sometimes it might even be the best solution), we don't support it because it constrains our ability to change the system. Thus, if you build an application that relies on this approach, you must accept a certain binary compatibility liability. Specifically, if we change Mail's preferences file format, your program will probably break.


The job for you and your management is to balance the benefits of this approach (no flashing windows as Mail starts up) against the potential binary compatibility liability.
