well, right now my problem is that I've spent about half a day

You could check the 'bootp' project; several of the programs there do
writes to BPF devices. It's on the darwin site (<http://
developer.apple.com/darwin>).
For a start, I'd like to study an example and play with it, it
would help me become familiar with this and avoid
stupid^H^H^H^H^H^Hbasic questions.
But (!), i won't complain if you want to help me ! ;-D
Don't have any free cycles (I have some expensive ones, if you
want ;-}) for the next few weeks.
