In reply to Justin C. Walker's message of the 7/10/05 at 9:50 am -0700,
The "spec" allows for routing. There are different formats
depending on your needs. AIR, the "routable" version is embedded in
a UDP packet; the unroutable version is just a (recognizable) bunch
of bits in an ethernet frame.
Ah, but where do you send the UDP pkt to? Broadcasts aren't (in
general) going to be forwarded by a router, not even across a VPN. If
the target had a static IP, it might work, but if it's on DHCP, it
won't have an IP while it's asleep. Or if the LAN was connected by a
hub, you could try sending it to another IP in the same subnet, but
who uses a hub these days? I tried it over the (LAN-LAN) VPN from my
house to the office, and it doesn't work.
Anyway, thanks for the pointer; I found Perl and C code at
<http://gsd.di.uminho.pt/jpo/software/wakeonlan/mini-howto/wol-mini-howto-3.html>
Both "wakeonlan" and "wakelan" (see above) worked on both my Linux
and OSX boxes, and more importantly, from the Linux box at the remote
site, I could wake up the remote Mac and ssh into it.
Thanks again
