In 2001 I wrote the tunnel.kext. Amazing that it is still maintained

Anyway, I need similar functionality for a project and I was wondering
if 10.4 has something build in with tun functionality.

I also see the OS X network infrastructure has improved in several
interesting ways. I kind of lost contact with that side of the world
:-)

Are there now maybe better ways to have userspace app talk to the ip
stack? I basically need to inject en read IP, process it in userspace
and then give it back to the stack to put it on the network again.

If you have not read them yet, these are basic -- "Kernel Extension Concepts" and "Network Kernel Extensions Programming Guide". Yes there are ways (better?) to talk to the ip stack.
