Hi, I'm having a problem with a MacBook that's configured to use NIS when
the user is in the office, but when he's not, he needs to turn off NIS
authentication to avoid problems relating to "dead" NIS domains.
In Tiger, this was done by unchecking the NIS box via the Directory Access
utility. If he forgot, he had to endure a long timeout but was eventually
able to login to a completely local account (instead of his normal,
NIS/NFS account that he uses at work).
In Leopard, the NIS check box is selected and greyed out in the Directory
Utility so he is not able to disable it. Furthermore, the login process
doesn't seem to be authenticating the userid/password of the local account
against the "file" credentials (search order is setup for files first,
then NIS). Looking in /var/log/system.log, there are the expected
messages from ypbind about the dead NIS domain.
My question for the list is: what is the "official" way to change the
authentication configuration to not use NIS when the user is away from the
office/NIS server? And, in a pinch, is there a way to do it via single
user mode since he can't login now.
Note: this does NOT work (in single user mode):
fsck -fy
mount -uw /
launchctl load \
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
dscl . -delete /Users/localacct AuthenticationAuthority
passwd localacct
exit
Thanks for your help!
Steven
