I solved my problem by using a Leopard-only call to snoop the certificates until I found my own identity. My solution is still a lot of code, and sub-launching openSSL is pretty gross. If anybody has a cleaner solution, I'd love to hear it. BTW, that Leopard-only call to use the system identity (suggested to me at the WWDC lab) doesn't work because if I use that identity, my connection closes with a decryptFail error.
