Method for determining wireless connection type

Hi folks,

I'm new to network programming and have some questions for a Wi-Fi tool I'm conceiving.

What would be the quickest way to determine the network type (802.11g, 802.11b, etc.) that an Airport Extreme (or other card) is connected to?

Also, is there a way to force Airport Extreme cards to use a particular type? There used to be a method for forcing B with A/B cards. However, it's unclear if there is such a way with the new Intel Airport Extreme which also supports A.

thanks,

Jaime Magiera
