I'm pretty sure there isn't a quick way. You'd have to have a
wireless interface that supports 802.11 monitor mode, which not all
AirPort cards do, and you'd need to snoop for the probe responses
from the AP you're associated with (you'd need to initiate the probes
somehow), and you'd have to parse the raw 802.11 packets yourself.
None of the functions for doing that in the AirPort drivers are
visible in the network interface API.
Also, is there a way to force Airport Extreme cards to use a
particular type? There used to be a method for forcing B with A/B
cards. However, it's unclear if there is such a way with the new
Intel Airport Extreme which also supports A.
