local verses remote traffic monitoring

Hi,

I've looked at several opensource projects that track network usage (MenuMeters, SurplusMeter, etc.).

I'd like to do something similar but I can't seem to figure out how to filter out "local" communication verses that destined for an outside network (the Internet).

For example, I'd like to track network usage (packets, bytes, etc.) as I watch a YouTube movie, but NOT when I copy a file from one Mac to another Mac on the same subnet.

I don't care about supporting complicated scenarios.  All I care about is data being transfered BEHIND my firewall verses that data that travels THROUGH my firewall.

Thank you for any pointers,
CxT
