You basically have two choices here:

(1) Talk to the firewall router using SNMP to get its traffic stats.

(2) Write an Interface Filter NKE to look at the traffic on
    each data link and only count packets that are not to or from
    a local IP subnet.

    I've implemented this approach in my own tools
    [Traffic Discovery in IPNetRouterX/IPNetSentryX]
