How on earth would 10.5.2 change the chipset in your hardware?

This confusion over which network to join on login/wake is not particularly new to OS X and there are numerous documented troubleshooting procedures for dealing with the problem. The one that almost always works is simply blowing away the prefs files and starting over. Have you tried that?
