I've Googled ("client-side SSL" iPhone -- with and without quotes),
and I've text-searched the documents, but I can't find any reference
to setting up client-side SSL on the iPhone.

Is this because it isn't possible, or is there somewhere else I should
look?

What do you mean by client-side? Do you using client-side certs (which aren't required for normal https traffic), or do you just mean using SSL in a client application?

I am not sure if client side certs are supported in the CFNetwork that ships with the iPhone. However usage of SSL from client applications is definitely supported, using both CFNetwork and higher level APIs.
