I never said it was for _her_ benefit :-). She can run the matching app on the Mac but I think the app can run while the phone is locked too. It will be playing sounds and I believe this is allowed.

Well, while your app is running you can set [[UIApplication sharedApplication] idleTimerDisabled], which will keep the device from going to sleep and if the user locks the device (I think) your app continues to run at full speed. The obvious downside/tradeoff is that you will drain the battery at a rapid rate.
