I am trying to determine how DNS requests are supposed to work with multiple interfaces and how they actually work on the Mac.
I have looked at several RFCs and I cannot find an answer to my question.
If the machine has multiple interfaces, each interface can have DNS entries.
If all interfaces are up, I would expect DNS to use the primary and secondary DNS servers on the highest priority interface.
If that interface loses connectivity, but does not go down (for example, wifi is still connected to an access point, but the access point can no longer reach the internet) then I would expect the DNS request to time out on the primary, then secondary DNS server on that interface and then being to use the primary DNS server of the next highest priority interface.
But what seems to happen is that it continues to use the DNS servers or the primary interface, so, even though the user has an available interface with connectivity, he/she cannot use it.
Does anyone know which RFC should cover the correct way that this should be handled? Does this work as specified by the RFC on the Mac?
