Yikes!
So maybe that would explain why SSL doesn't work on OS 10.9 and 10.10, but why does it start working again in 10.11 and later?
My best guess is that we removed the ‘linked on or later’ check on modern systems because it was only ever there as a compatibility crutch.
Why are you building with the 10.8 SDK? I understand that it can take time to move forward to new tools, but 10.9 is five years old now. The longer you stay on the old SDKs, the further off the beaten path you end up, and this is just one example of the various land mines waiting for you out there.
My company is struggling and doesn't have a lot of money for new
hardware. I'm mostly developing on an old Mac Pro that can't run
anything later than OS 10.7 (though I do have another machine that
can run later OSes for testing). That means I'm mostly using Xcode
4.6.3, which has the 10.8 SDK. (I occasionally run Xcode on a newer
machine so I can use the static analyzer or Address Sanitizer, but I
don't like the fact that the code folding ribbon has gone away.)
The compatibility reasons mentioned by others are also relevant.
