FCP editing over Gigabit

Hi all,
I've done a bunch of web research and the answer to this seems
ambiguous: under what circumstances is it reliable to perform FCP
editing across a Gigabit Ethernet LAN without Xsan? (i.e. files are
stored on a NAS device such as OS X Server)
I suspect that the answer depends on some variables. If that's the
case, then:
1. What kinds of compression would be workable in this case?
2. Are there server requirements that would make the difference?
(i.e. processor speed, DAS speed, OS X Server or Client, etc.)
3. What else?
Thanks much!
