Simon,
As said FCE HD can read FCP XMLs, FCP can read FCE documents.
It's difficult to discuss such a theme if you don't have access to
both of the apps. I can't help there.

The problem is that I'm working on a workflow proposal. I don't
actually have a copy of FCE to experiment with, so before I
recommend for people to spend money I want to have some idea that
it will work. I have a group of people that I collaborate with who
currently have iMacs/iBooks and as such can't run Final Cut Studio
as they're not up to spec, they can however run FCE, and for simple
timeline editing that's all they need.
However interoperability between FCE and FCP is obviously a
problem, which is why it would be nice to able to export out of FCP
something they could read.
Thanks,
Simon...

Hi SImon,
Haven't you tried to "force open" the FCP XML with FCE, it used to
work,
I don't have this machine with FCE anymore (the version was FCE
HD) but that worked fine. You should probably use XML version 2
with your FCP export. For the other way round (FCE to FCP) you
don't need XML.

From what I know the iMovie exported XML is the FCP XML
interchange format, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Due to
the difference in functionality between FCP and FCE there
obviously won't be complete support for all the features, but for
shared functionality this shouldn't be a problem.

Hi folks,
There is no XML support in FCE except for iMovie exported XML.
You can however, open any FCE project in FCP. It really isn't
meant to go the other way.
Best Luck,
Helnea

It would seem that a plugin for FCE that could export FCP XML
would be very beneficial and not that difficult to do, is there
anyone working on something like this? Or is this something
that Apple may be planning for a future FCE release, it would
fit with their policy of interoperability between the products.
What do you mean by long version? Do you mean not supporting
nested sequences?

You can't export XML out of FCE, but FCP can open FCE files.
FCE does not officially import XML, but you can drag a XML to
the FCE program icon and it will import the XML as long
version and used effects etc will match.

I'm interested in the compatibility between the project/
timeline formats of Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro. If
they are both XML is it possible to share the files between
the two applications and if not is there a simple conversion
tool (Bi-directional)?
I'm not talking about sophisticated LiveType or Motion
functionality, just basic timeline editing with simple common
filters and transitions. As I'm aware that there are some
functional differences between the two applications.
Thanks,
Simon...
