Ryan,
Final Cut Server 1.0 does not have inbuilt support to analyse Motion
project in the same way that it does Final Cut Pro projects. It can
happily catalogue and version the motion project, but it's not going
to look inside and see what clips are being used by the project, or
generate a clip proxy for the motion project.
But to achieve your objective of previewing Motion projects, you can
do the following:
If all of your media is on a Device set up for Edit in Place (eg,
XSan, or an AFP share where you have entered EIP information), then
the workflow to preview desired motion project would be as follows:
1. Search for desired Motion project in the FC Svr Java interface.
2. Drag the Motion project from FC Svr to Quicktime in the dock.
And you can then preview the project without having to make sure that
any other media was cached.
You are also correct in stating that there is no current method to
associate external proxy files with an asset. Given that this is a
brand new product, we are very interested in feedback about how the
software will be used. So if this is a feature that is important to
you, then I can recommend that you go here:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutserver.html
and let us know what features you would like to see in a future version.
thanks,
Matt

Currently Final Cut Server supports Motion Projects but is incapable

quicktime and motion installed is able to do a realtime preview of

I would really like to coerce Final Cut Server to be able to preview
and create proxy files of motion documents. I have tried changing
mimes to no avail. All of our motion XMLs use relative URIs and the
referenced media exists in the same directory as the project file.
If I change my client computer's motion project association to
always open with quicktime, and then I make sure to cache any
referenced media from final cut server, I can then preview the
motion project in quicktime.
Its a very impractical solution since we are working with literally
hundreds of thousands of motions xml files. It would be nice if
Final Cut Server could look and see if any reference media exists on
the server and cache it automatically.
I was thinking that maybe I could have an external script run all my
motion documents through compressor to generate the proxy media, but
there doesnt seem to be a way to associate proxy media with source
files outside of FCServer's default automated process.
any ideas?
thanks,
ryan
