Hi Peter,
As far as I know, pasting icon data works best -- or really only works
- when you've copied it from another file/folder/app that already has
the complete icns resource. Just pasting image data, say from
photoshop for example, works only in a limited way -- I believe partly
because an icns resource is made up of several images, not just one
512x512 icon.
You could try installing your custom icns resource in to something
else (file/folder/whatever), then using the copy/paste technique
between the Get Info windows of the respective items, to get the
custom icon on to the desired item? Might work.
