I see other people have made plugins in the way, we're after creating plugins that fit right in to the interface.
We definitely understand the value in being able to do that.
Is it likely to appear in an update to FCP and/or the FxPlug SDK? Would it help in any way if I report it as a "bug" here: bugreport.apple.com?
I can't comment on future releases. Please do file a bug. We are already tracking the issue, but more requests by developers can influence the priority of the bug.

I don't believe that it's possible at this time. Custom UI in FCP's windows won't take keyboard focus. You can provide a button which pops up a modal dialog under your control, and accept keyboard input there, if that will work with what you're trying to do.

We're aware of the issue but have not found a resolution yet.
