Hi Martin,
I've never really developed plugins, but made some utilities which did launch Motion or FCP from shell.
The thing you describe has been there forever. Try to put it into an "try" block to eliminate the error.

The only solution is to click the Motion icon in the Dock, which then fades in the document window and brings things back to life.
