Did you get to try out the fonts suggestion Roger suggested? Can you share your logs (system log, OD log on server, system log on client) around the timestamp of the failure as well?

Glen, try deleting the fonts folder from that (and every effected) users
home directory library-- we have seen that same problem and that deletion
resolves it and the problem does not seem to recur. Seems to be a font
issue introduced w/10.5.6... and I assume your server is also running
10.5.6?
