We've had user accounts get the "admin" status taken away in Snow Leopard. This requires unbinding and rebinding to the AD domain and this fixes it. Not sure why that happens but your issue may be something similar (i.e. mobile account type may be going away).

Subject: [Rockies-Edu] Mobile Active Directory Accounts in 10.6.3
Hello Rockies EDU list,
Since upgrading to 10.6.3 (I think) I have been having problems using cached credentials with mobile user accounts bound to our active directory servers. While on campus users are able to login fine. While off campus users are usually able to login fine but about 10% of the time when they go off campus the login screen says the have the wrong user name and password when in fact they are typing the correct password. They are then unable to login until returning to campus. I seam unable to find a pattern as to when this happens. I have seen it both on the lock screen when the computer comes out of sleep and when the computer has been turned off after a full shutdown. I am assuming the cashed credentials have somehow become corrupt. I have noticed this problem on my computer and at least one other user of mine. Does anyone have any thoughts?
