Hi,
I booted up my laptop (MacBook Pro, 2007ish, Snow Leopard 10.6.6)
yesterday and it did the normal gray screen with the gray apple and
the spinny wheel. It went to black and then was stuck there. After a
bit of fussing with it (which I will describe) it appears to also do
this when attempting to boot from the DVD.
I did all the usual stuff--reset the SMC, zap the PRAM, tried to boot
in safe mode--nothing helped. So I thought I read that you could fix
this by using the firmware restoration CD. So I downloaded the one for
my computer (and the one for the the computer after mine) and made
CD's. I followed the instructions: boot, hold down the power key, wait
for the flashing lights then insert the CD. The first few times
nothing seemed to happen. Then the firmware install progress bar
eventually appeared after one repeat, but it seemed to get stuck. So
(and here's the stupid part--you don't need to tell me), I
interreupted and repeated the process with the other (newer) CD. That
got stuck too. But now when I try it again I never get the firmware
install progress bar--it flashes on the screen (two or three times for
fractions of a second) and then shuts down.
I can boot in single user mode and see the file system, but fsck
doesn't seem to work.
The data is backed up, so I don't mind reinstalling, but it doesn't
boot from either a Leopard or a Snow Leopard DVD. With Leopard it gets
to the gray screen with the spinny wheel and after several minutes
(while reading from the DVD) it just stops, the spinny wheel is on the
screen but not moving. With Snow Leopard it appears to go through
everything but goes to black and is stuck. I'm still trying to locate
the original DVD that came with the system--I'm thinking it's a
version of 10.4 but I don't remember for sure.
I've tried looking for it on the network (before I screwed things up)
and it didn't seem to be there for a remote login. I've also tried to
use an external monitor and that didn't seem to work either.
Any ideas?
TG
