There are loooong threads on the Apple discussion boards about what appears to be the issue you're experiencing.
Here's the start - it's so long, the original thread was closed (causing browser time outs) and a new one started:

One possible cause sited is an NVIDIA graphics card failure due to a manufacturing chipset issue.

I don't know if you'd be covered now or not but if Apple Support can confirm that it was caused by the NVIDIA problem then you might be OK. Never hurts to try, especially if you can verify that your laptop has this card and you tell Support that you read about this problem.
