You could also use Airserver or Reflection to mirror the iPad to a computer connected to the Smartboard.

If you want to hard wire the iPad, the Apple store sells adaptors that allow you to physically connect to the projector. There is a 30-pin to VGA adapter and also a 30-pin Digital AV adapter that include a HDMI port.

We have been using an Apple TV as an interface to wirelessly connect our iPad 2s to our SMARTboard units. While it works, it is a bit clumsy.
Is there a simpler/clearer way to do that?
