Hi All,

Apple Education has some exciting announcements for you. New programs, best practice documentation, and device management options will streamline your Apple deployment and support workflows.

We will be scheduling a presentation tour soon to take a deep dive into this, but for now here are some great resources for you to become familiar with.

Among the exciting announcements is the launch of the Device Enrollment Program (DEP).

DEP allows devices that were purchased through the Apple Education channel to enjoy these management options:

- Zero-touch, mandatory MDM enrollment
- Wireless supervision
- Streamlined setup assistant

Yes, this means that 1:1 devices deployed with DEP have non-removable MDM (no delete button) and will always enroll in your specified MDM solution upon activation. Combined with Managed Distribution, DEP provides an incredible 1:1 deployment experience for IT and the classroom - simply hand end users an iPad in out-of-the-box configuration to realize automatic, policy-based, mandatory MDM management and silent app installation.

DEP requires a district owned MDM server. If your district or site has institutionally owned iOS devices, then you should be exploring MDM solutions.

Now is a great time to partner with an MDM provider that you trust to support the iOS management platform and the K12 / Higher Education markets. Make sure to ask your MDM vendor if they support DEP and Managed Distribution! Learn more about MDM here:

Another new program is Apple ID for students under 13.

Students under the age of 13 can get an Apple ID through the Apple ID for Students program. Apple provides an online resource to obtain verifiable parental consent at the request of a school. Once consent is received, parents can set up an Apple ID for their student and gain access to information about the use of the Apple ID and any associated data.

Here are the latest resources for Apple's Volume Purchase Program, your single source for all Apple software licensing. 

Managed distribution is a new feature of VPP that allows institutions to retain ownership of app licenses while temporarily assigning apps to individual Apple IDs for 1:1 deployments. Managed distribution allows admins to provide the great self-service experience of the App Store while retaining ownership of apps.

I also want to take this time to mention Caching Server. Large 1:1 deployments are already realizing a better end user experience and decreased internet bandwidth consumption by caching Apple software locally with OS X Server running Caching Server.
