Hello Zach,
Blocking mesu.apple.edu will not allow iOS devices to get the update catalog downloaded, which would allow them to check their version against global software update servers and see iOS 8 as available. A couple of worthy notes:
1. If the user gets the catalog away from your network (where mesu.apple.com is not blocked), they’ll be able to get the software updates on your network, unless you block further URLs of software update servers (which aren’t published) 2. If you utilize supervision and a global proxy, you can block mesu.apple.com and that will prevent updating via global proxy regardless of where the device goes.

I would like to prevent all the iPads in our district from getting iOS 8 for a while. I was originally hoping to block it by server or something similar. Apple edu was not very helpful on that end, they told me I could block ports. I don't like the idea of blocking a whole bunch of ports and crippling other services as well. I contacted our MDM service and was greated with a lot of confusion, hold times and a promise with a call back and solution. I am not holding my breath. I googled and found several blogs listing server names. I would prefer to not gamble on a blog that's not confirmed as good. I have some direction from a gracious associate in Denver that blocks it after it comes out and can see the source. Do any of you have experience with blocking updates before they come out? Any advice or help is greatly appreciated! Thank you! Zach -- Zachary Miller District Tech Manitou Springs School District
