If you join Apple's Select developer program ($500), you can buy
WebObjects licenses through the program for $400. For two WebObjects
5.2 licenses you'll wind up saving $100 -- $500 + $400 + $400 =
$1300, instead of $700 * 2 = $1400 -- and if you wind up buying more
licenses you'll save even more. (I say this because you said you had
been planning on buying another PowerBook and another WebObjects
license.)
I think everybody would love it if there were an upgrade price from
WebObjects 5.1 to WebObjects 5.2. But unfortunately I doubt anything
we can do will change Apple's mind at this point; they've become
really unresponsive on the issue of upgrade pricing, probably due to
economic constraints.
It's unfortunate there's no simple page telling how to set up a
Microsoft SQL Server data source in WebObjects. You should be able
to just use Microsoft's 100% Java JDBC driver with a standard JDBC
URL in EOModeler; the JDBC driver's documentation should tell you how
to construct the JDBC URL for a given database, as it shouldn't be
WebObjects-specific.
I think you'll have the best luck if you order a couple of WebObjects
books from BN.com ("Professional WebObjects 5.0 with Java" from Wrox
is my favorite) and stick with WebObjects for a couple more weeks. I
don't think you're going to match the productivity you'll get from
WebObjects on any other platform. So if you treat the decision as an
economic one, and run the numbers, I bet they'll strongly favor
WebObjects in the end.
