I have narrowed down my database selection to one of these two choices going
forward. If anyone has experience with both of these products and more
specifically the exact licenses mentioned here, I would appreciate advice
before I lock in on one (no turning back!). Here is the solution scenarios
and parameters
Openbase (Performer) = $1,999
Frontbase (E-Business) = $999
* Primary web applications will be for secure access by our customers to
web-enabled databases allowing them to manage their customer and client data
which we use to provide services on behalf of our customers
* I don't want to spend more than $2,000 starting off on first deployment
license
* I do want full and supported integration with WebObjects 5.2 and EO
Modeler
* I do want to be able to connect to the databases from MS Visual Basic or
MS Access on network PC's
* I probably will develop on Mac OS 10.2 (but Win 2000 is not out of the
question) and probably deploy on Mac OS 10.2, 10.2 Server, however need
ability to deploy on Windows 2000 if need arises.
* I will be incorporating Credit Card processing at some stage in future web
apps
* I do not think we will exceed 100 concurrent users in the first year of
deployment and long-term I cannot see us exceeding 1,000 concurrent users
within the next 5 years.
* Our company uses Macs on OS X and Windows using either XP Pro or 2000
server.
* I have much legacy databases in house in both FileMaker Pro and MS Access
which I will migrate to the enterprise database server (FB (Frontbase) or OB
(Openbase), however we will continue to use FileMaker Pro and MS Access for
desktop day to day analysis and custom reporting.
* I have much custom Visual Basic code that directly queries our in-house
Access databases using ODBC, ADO or DAO and SQL strings embedded in VB. As
data structures are moved to FB or OB, I want to be able to keep those
in-house VB program functionality working by just changing the data sources
(connection strings).
* I want to be able to "link" to tables in the enterprise database using MS
Access front ends or Visual Basic front ends if possible for "quick and
dirty" data extraction and custom report generation.
* I want to be able to easily import and/or export data to the FB or OB
databases
Thanks for advice in advance, Kieran.
