My hands down favourite is Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. He even has an
electronic version available for free download: http://mindview.net/Books
Not only will this gently teach you the mechanics of Java, but it also
leads you to actually thinking in a Java mindset and also does a pretty
good job of instilling good OO thinking as well.
