I am not a beginner in WebObjects, nor media asset management. So you
can take my word for something when I say that the cheapest way to have
something like that is to buy it from a software company.
Integrating WO and IM, having a sound way to handle media files in a
database (something you're not going to throw after 2 months), managing
the performance of such an app is definitely not an easy task. If I
remember well, it should take you as much as 20 man months to have
something really usable... ;-) Let's say you have the salary of a
northern VA wo developer, that would make something around 100 000$.
And I won't talk about The Learning Curve.
Unfortunately, I don't know well enough solutions to recommend you any
one of them. Netxposure's Image Portal for X might be cheaper than the
others, I don't know http://www.netx.net/.
Webware mambo used to work on WO platforms (the CTO is a Nextstep
freak), but seems to be reluctant to do so now.
Maybe also Canto Cumulus web thingy is what you might consider: it fits
exactly your needs. Out of my mind, I'd recommend you to spend money on
this, not time on WO.
On the other side, if you're having the time and energy and will to do
something like that, the solution you should built it on is WO, with
Jmagick and QT for java (and some others too). But wait! We happen to
have an app that does media asset management using webobjects (though
old and badly working on 4.5). So I don't want you to become another
competitor ;-)
Have a nice day though,
Cyril
