Hello Scott,
I just want to ask how you find mySQL as a database and if you have
used OpenBase so that you can form any comparisons you can share.
I converted an app from Borland Delphi and SQLServer to WO+OpenBase. I
ended up not liking OpenBase for some, to me, very important reasons
and switched to MySql with about a day's work. Mostly changing
datatypes to more sensible ones (unfortunately I never did make them
standard SQL92 types).
It worked much better for me than OpenBase did. Just make sure to
install the MySql driver properly. Also, someone recently listed on
www.versiontracker.com
an admin GUI for MySQL.
The thing is the server already has mySQL and MS SQL Server installed
and the tekkies already know that stuff, so I'm thinking it may save
me some pain in the long run if I go with what they are already
running and know. If I put OpenBase on the server I'll have to deal
with every issue of tech support should it fail on me.... Worring
times and i'm lost for answers.
Run the one the ops guys like. Given the above choice I don't think
there's much difference in what you can expect.
Basically I'd like to know
1). How hard is it got get connected to mySQL (are the adapters
readily available)?
Very easy. I actually found OpenBase harder. But I did do OB first.
2). How hard is it to learn mySQL for a complete SQL novice like
myself? If it's as easy as learning openBase then no problem. And if
it has a manager interface much like that of OpenBase, then it should
be really easy.
It's all the same if you stick to standard SQL. If you've been careful
with EOModeler there are virtually no changes to be made.
3). Is it worth transfering?
Only you can answer that.
4). Will there be a lot of marked changes that will need to be made to
the EOModel and therefore the code? This is important.
I found that not to be the case. It took me about a day to convert
from one to the other.
