Hello Scott,
I just want to ask how you find mySQL as a database and if you have used OpenBase so that you can form any comparisons you can share.

The reason I'm asking is that I too use version 5.1.3, but I am the only person on the server I host from that uses WebObjects (yep, they kindly installed it for me no charge) and now as I am getting ready to deploy I find that I need an OpenBase License which is gonna cost $$$$$$$$ at least $2000 to get up and running. I don't really have that to spend and as all the projects are my own, it's my pocket these $$$$$$$ are hard on.

The thing is the server already has mySQL and MS SQL Server installed and the tekkies already know that stuff, so I'm thinking it may save me some pain in the long run if I go with what they are already running and know. If I put OpenBase on the server I'll have to deal with every issue of tech support should it fail on me.... Worring times and i'm lost for answers.

Basically I'd like to know

1). How hard is it got get connected to mySQL (are the adapters readily available)?
2). How hard is it to learn mySQL for a complete SQL novice like myself? If it's as easy as learning openBase then no problem. And if it has a manager interface much like that of OpenBase, then it should be really easy.
3). Is it worth transfering?
4). Will there be a lot of marked changes that will need to be made to the EOModel and therefore the code? This is important.
5). Are there limitations on deployment like OpenBase with licensing unlimited databases?
6). Or, should I best stay where I am and fork out for an OpenBase License...? I am compeled to do this only because I can understand it, it's easy to use and we all know it works perfectly with WebObjects. My one concern is that OpenBase may not handle a lot of data well later on and later on will come sooner rather than later in this case. I have been following comments on OpenBase List and have read a few things that can make you think twice about getting to deep with openBase, but then that can happen pretty much with most things. As a starting db it seems like it runs like clockwork with little or no trouble, but later on I have read that there is trouble with exporting the data after a certain size and aother transference problems, but that's going by what I'm reading. I shrug my shoulders and lift my palms up to the sky... What do I do?

I know nothing about mySQL except the best part... Free! or at least the part that sells you into vortex you didn't bank on when you find yourself forking out exeptional $$$$$$ for some support.

If anyone has any suggestions on my best option given my senario, I would love to hear from them. The database, the database... ahh the database.

Kind regards
Jonathan

Hello.

I have searched the archives, but did not spot anything like this.

One of my coworkers has reported that a to-many with LEFT OUTER JOINs do not work.correctly with WO 5.1 and MySql 3.23.53 or 4.0.9. Apparently, the wrong syntax is generated and the joins fail. This same model works with correctly with Oracle.

I have just downloaded 5.2, and have worked through the tutorials, so I suspect I am not really skilled enough yet to debug such a beast. Before I spend serious time trying to reproduce this, does this problem sound familiar to anyone else? I believe she is using a fairly early mysql driver, and is using 5.1.

Scott
