You're right, it's both.

I suppose I could compare and contrast WebObjects and WebSphere for days.

But let me sum things up for you from the bottom-line.

WebSphere solutions are relatively expensive($10k-160k) and unless your customers has a six or seven figure budget for the solution, don't bother. There are however, the new WebSphere Express products which is IBMs response to the reality that crafty J2EE developers have found other less expensive application servers to use, specifically JBoss which is starting to take a significant market share. Another thing to consider is the IBM development tools such as WebSphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD) which comes in a couple of different flavors and is priced between 3-10k per developer seat. These tools, while capable, are a bit screwy. The QA on these products leave much to be desired. On the upside, WebSphere is based on industry standards and IBM tech support is very responsive. There are also several WebSphere packages available for specific implementations such as e-commerce, portal, content management etc. I've worked with several of these package and while they work, their constituent components are not well integrated and documentation is a bit iffy so you will spend a lot of time figuring out the nuts and bolts of the solution. This is good if you're looking for service hours -- bad if you're trying to contain costs and hit deadlines..

Also, there is an open source variant of WSAD called Eclipse (www.eclipse.org) that you can download and play with.

All in all, I prefer WebObjects though I'm still relatively new to it. It just seems to work better. Apple has some polishing to do but relative to WebSphere, it's a dream.

Of course, you're theoretically more employable with WebSphere, though I don't see many WebSphere developer getting hired these days.

Good luck, Mike

Is webobjects a framework or a web application server or both. I guess it is both.

Could you please compare webobjects to weblogic or/and websphere?
I am so confused. Thanks.

regards
Joan
