Thanks very much; I'm going to uninstall and then reinstall WO 5.2. I
guess something corrupt happened in the install somehow. Looking at my
disk, it's possible that I ran out of disk space. Recalling, it's also
possible that I logged in as a different user for the second login (I
didn't realize that after the install process rebooted my computer, and I
logged in again, the install process would still be doing things. I may
have logged in as administrator for the intiial install, and another
account for post-reboot stuff. I don't know if that may have messed things up).
False alarm I guess, thanks to those who checked on it themselves.

Jonathan, we just tried a fresh 5.2 install on Win2K, and the commands
you're describing all work fine. Check your PATH; it should look something
like this:
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;D:\jdk1.3.1_06
\bin;;D:\JDK13~1.1_0\bin;C:\Apple\Library\Executables;C:\Apple\bin;C:\Apple\
