Hi, my name is Mike Little and first of all, I'd like to apologize if
this message is little off topic for this list, the list rules page is
currently down, so I couldn't check.
I'm a solution developer with an IBM business partner. My reason for
writing you is that for the last several weeks I've been investigating
Apple's solutions, particularly WebObjects as a less expensive
alternative to IBM's WebSphere for my customers. So far, from a
technical and financial perspective I've been very impressed with
Apple's offerings. I've got a strong J2EE background and picking up
WebObjects has been much easier than I expected. My concern is with
Apple's Support program's for business solution providers such as
myself. I've recently been in contact with several local members of
the Apple Consultant's Network and frankly I have not been impressed
with them. These folks are mostly mom and pop organizations focusing on
little more than AppleScripting Quark and Photoshop. They have
expressed an interest in developing more enterprise oriented solutions
taking advantage of OS X, but seriously, they haven't got a clue about
how to do this from either a marketing or technical perspective.
Aside from personal loyalties for Apple products over the last 24
years, I'm looking at Apple solutions for one business reason: lower my
customer's costs, and increase my competitiveness. Most of the
solutions i've provided my customers over the last few years have been
in the $100k-250k range with third party (re: IBM) software licensing
fees typically accounting for about 30-40% of the solution. Of course,
WebObjects is significantly less expensive and IMHO, technically better
in many areas than IBM's WebSphere and if I could keep customer
licensing fees down, I can scale the solutions with more hardware and
thus provide better performance. So I would like to get into the
WebObjects game as my customers are getting increasingly stingy.
I realize that Apple had to take a hiatus from the enterprise market
while it got its act together with OS X, but they're ready to get back
in the game now. I would like to participate, however I would like to
see an effort in forming a community of Apple Enterprise solution
providers from which I can draw support and build a market. Apple has
all the technical elements in place, they just need to get the
marketing down and get third party solution providers interested.
So with this in mind, do you of anyone, either internally at Apple or
third party solution providers who might be interested in exploring
this issue with me? Any comments are welcome.
Also, if you know of any solution providers who are using WebObjects
for business solutions, I'd be interested in speaking with them about
their experiences.
I look forward to your response and thank you for your time,
Mike
