For what it is worth, I never trust software updates on critical systems. Generally, I have had good luck, but the failures (on lin, win, and mac) have all been memorable.

It all comes down to this: If Apple, or any software company, puts their name on a product, for instance Web Objects, and then offers an AUTOMATIC update that is NOT compliant w/ Web Objects, the update should be allowed as an automatic update.

I suppose what really frosts me about this is the perceived lack of testing by the WO team. Apple has been distributing seeds of Java 1.4.1 since last October, and anyone with a free online developer license could get them. Was the WO team grabbing them and trying basic qualification on the pre-releases?

If they were, then whatever is causing problems appeared between the last seed and the release. This happens sometimes, and usually means a quick patch, as the problem is not fundamental to the new architecture. This evidence of due diligence on the part of the WO team would help us sleep easier.

If they did not do that testing, then the patch might well take longer, and I am rather vexed.

I shall wait in happy anticipation, but I do see this as someone dropping the ball. Again, if it was a last minute change introduced between the final beta and the release of Java, neither side is really at fault, but if there was a way to find it earlier, then I would have expected some testing and a comment in the release notes. (NB - testing done by the WO team would produce critical priority bugs, which the Java team would then either fix or highlight as a known issue allowing us to decide not to apply the update.)
