First, WebObjects DOES appear to be a rather powerful web development
platform -- probably the one I will proceed with.
It is powerful, but it's also rather complicated. Some of the Apple WO
documentation kind of suggests that you don't need to really understand WO
to build applications. That you can do things very simply, for instance
with Direct To Web.
However, in the experience of most developers on this list, this isn't
really true for all but the simplest applications. Making a more complex
app, and especially debugging an app, really requires pretty good knowledge
of how WO works. There's a learning curve. All of us believe it's worth
it, or we wouldn't be using WO, but beware, know that from the start, so
you don't get frustrated when you discover it and feel like you were
mislead. :)
Second, the documentation
that Apple provides sucks big time!
It could be better, but it's a LOT better than it used to be. A lot a
lot. For one thing, the "Developing Web Applications" document actually
does gives you all the information you need to develop an understanding of
how WO works, like I said you will eventually need in the above paragraph.
The fact that such a document exists, well that's a lot better than it used
to be.
As I had mentioned, I had gone through their little tutorials regarding Web
Services and Web Applications. Unfortunately, there is nothing anywhere
that gets into any real-life concepts beyond that of just tying a WOString
object to a method. Also, most of the docs simply have you follow along and
tell you what to do without ever explaining the concept behind the process.
Again, the "Web Applications" document at:
http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/webobjects/Web_Applications/index.html
actually is quite good at going into all the concepts behind what's going
on. You may find it daunting, it goes into so many concepts. But it's
quite a thorough document.

So, again, thanks for shedding more light on the subject. Now, I'm off to
the bookstore...
