John,
A path I have recently travelled myself.

Hi,
just got my copy of WO 5.2 after a long time of procrastination.
I wanted to know from any of you experienced people out there whether
there are problems with running 5.2 under Java 1.4.1 - I know Apple
doesn't support it, but that's another story.
There are many problems with the two - especially in the D2J apps. Now
every project I create I immediately set the Java back to 1.3.1 (see
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75505).
Also, and this may be related to the previous question, what is the
reality of DirectToJava clients. I know the book says talks about
amazing flexibility, ease of use etc, but already I am finding niggling
behaviour with, say, the example entities Student and Activity (from
the manual/book), I find you have to be very careful in how you add
activities to a student.
This sounds like an effect from the Java problems. However I have found
that with D2J if you make any small mistake, it results in a small -
but expanding - problem in the client app. Usually some fields are
blank, won't accept entries etc. If you close the window and then
reopen it, all fields may be blank. Hard to track down the cause as no
error messages given (let me know if you need help with how to turn on
the debugging features).
When the compatible version of Java is used though, and the app is set
up correctly, you will find that D2J is a *really* great system. Main
problem with it is that it does everything you could want it to do with
so little effort - as long as you don't want it to do anything beyond
what it can do!
Good luck with your travels. It is a steep curve, but the view from the
top must be good ;)
Ray.
